Indictments handed out in Caleb Wilson hazing death case

On Wednesday a Baton Rouge, LA grand jury indicted a quintet of males in the hazing death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson.

Caleb McCray (L), Kyle Thurman (M), and Isaiah Smith (R)(BRPD)

Caleb McCray, 23, Isaiah Smith,28, and Kyle Thurman, 25, were all indicted on felony hazing charges. Mr. McCray also had a manslaughter indictment tacked on for his role in Wilson’s demise.

Winston Sanders and Jayden Landrum were indicted on charges of principal to felony hazing and obstruction of justice.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the fatal hazing incident occurred at a warehouse located on Woodcrest Drive near Greenwell Springs Road. Wilson and eight other young men, who were pledging Omega Psi Phi were lined up for a ritual that entailed Mr. McCray and other males putting on boxing gloves and punching the pledges in the chest. Wilson reportedly collapsed when he was hit in the chest.

Fraternity members did not immediately take Wilson to get medical attention.

“Rather than call the authorities once they realized something bad was going on with Caleb, what did they do? Change his clothes, come up with a story and drop him on the steps of the hospital,” Rob Marionneaux, the Wilson family’s attorney said.

The fraternity members were also less than forthcoming, as they initially told authorities they were at the BREC North Sherwood Park when Wilson collapsed.

WAFB reports that arrests warrants have been issued for Mr. Sanders and Mr.Landrum.
