Former Michigan State star basketball player Mateen Cleaves has been charged of sexual assault of a 24 year Mount Morris, Michigan woman.
Cleaves has been been charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent tocommit criminal sexual penetration, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. The charges stem from a September 2015 incident following a charity golf tournament and could carry a 15 year prison term.
According to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office, following the golf tournament, Cleaves and a group went to a bar. The Office says the accuser thought Cleaves was going to take her back to the club, which was why she got in his car. Rather than return to the golf club, he took her to a Mundy Bloc hotel where he is alleged to held her there against her will and then sexually assaulting her.
Cleaves’ attorney, Frank J. Manley said he expects his client to be cleared.
