Norfolk State named U.S. Basketball Writers Association Team of the Week

The Norfolk State women’s basketball team earned U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Team of the Week accolades following its upset victory 63-57 at Auburn on Sunday, Dec. 29.
 
Graduate guard Diamond Johnson led the Spartans with 17 points against the Tigers, adding 11 rebounds, four steals, and three assists to her totals. Sophomore guard Da’Brya Clark also scored in double figures for NSU with 15 points.
 
Johnson recorded her fifth career double-double against Auburn. She also became the first player since Chanette Hicks on Jan. 11, 2020 to lead Norfolk State in points, rebounds, steals and assists in a game.
 
The win marked the second time NSU defeated a team from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this season. The first upset win also came on the road at Missouri, 57-54, on Sunday, Nov. 10.
 
Norfolk State will return on Saturday, Jan. 4 to open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Maryland Eastern Shore. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Echols Hall.
