North Carolina Central tips off MEAC play against Coppin State on Saturday

The North Carolina Central University men’s basketball team begins Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play in Baltimore, Md. starting at Coppin State University on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles continue action at Morgan State University on Monday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

Last time out, the Eagles toppled St. Andrews University in a 121-61 victory on Dec. 31. NCCU closed out the calendar year with sharp shooting from redshirt senior guard Floyd Rideau Jr. who scored a career-high 26 points from 8-of-11 shooting. All eight field goals were from beyond the arc.

One Eagle broke the NCCU school record in the Division I era against the Knights. Junior guard Dionte Johnsonpassed for 16 assists breaking Fred Cleveland Jr.’s record set last season of 15 assists.

Johnson and redshirt senior Isaac Parson currently lead the MEAC in assists. The duo each average 4.3 assists per game.

NC Central sits in the top-20 of four different statistical categories in Division I. The Eagles are currently 11th in the nation in fastbreak points (17.29 per game), 16th in turnover margin (+5.1), fourth in turnovers forced per game (17.59) and 11th in steals per game (10.3).

The Maroon & Gray lead both series against its upcoming league opponents. NCCU has an 18-6 overall record over Coppin State and is 56-43 against Morgan State. The Eagles have lost two straight to the MSU Bears and are on a four-game winning streak versus the CSU Eagles.
