TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Florida A&M University new head women’s basketball coach Shalon Pillow announced on Wednesday the appointments of Jaye Nayreau and Jalen Powell as FAMU assistant women’s basketball coaches.
“Jaye is a veteran coach with experience on all levels. He has a great basketball mind and is a proven recruiter,” Pillow said. “Jalen is an up-and-coming coach who has a deep passion for the game and thrives in skill development,”
Nayreau comes to FAMU after spending the past season as the assistant coach of the Trinity Valley Community College women’s basketball program.
While at Trinity Valley, Nayreau’s responsibilities included all aspects of recruiting, on-floor coaching, player and skill development, opposition scouting and film breakdown, team academic guidance, assisting in community service outreach, and Lady Cardinals Basketball Camps.
Prior to Trinity Valley, Nayreau spent the previous two seasons coaching high school boy’s basketball at Osbourn Park in Manassas, Va. His duties included being the head coach for the junior varsity and freshman boys’ teams while also assisting the varsity program in the day-to-day operations.
Nayreau spent ten years coaching collegiate women’s basketball. Most recently, he was as assistant coach at Texas Southern University (TSU) from 2013-2015. At TSU, Nayreau served in the role of recruiting coordinator, overseeing the organization and execution of all student-athlete recruitment. His other duties included player development, opponent scouting, academic counseling, team travel and meals, and NCAA compliance liaison. The impact of his efforts led to back-to-back postseason appearances in the WNIT, along with a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship.
Powell comes to Tallahassee after spending the last year in New York working with her father at Basketball Results, a training facility, assisting with player development, marketing, accounting and finances. She previously also worked as the women’s basketball graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas.
Prior to Arkansas, Powell began her managerial career at the University of Mississippi, under then assistant coach and current Razorback associate head coach Todd Shaefer.
The Long Island, N.Y. native grew up in a basketball family. Her father Jerry Powell is an NBA trainer who has worked with stars like Paul George, Rajon Rondo, Lebron James, Miles Bridges, and Allen Crabbe.
