Savannah State hires Thomas Howard as head coach

Monday Savannah State announced the hiring of Thomas Howard new head football coach, the 26th coach in program history.

“This is a new chapter, not just for me, but for every SSU student athlete, fan, and supporter. I’m truly blessed and excited to join this institution, community, and fan base. Now it’s time to get to work and put this program back on top.”

Coach Howard previously served as the defensive coordinator at Fayetteville State University. This past season the Broncos posted a 6-4 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA. Under Coach Howard’s leadership, the Broncos’ defense was the number 2 scoring defense in the conference ( 18.7 ppg) as well as third in total defense ( 316.3 ypg). The unit also led the CIAA in run defense ( 90.8 ypg), third in defensive efficiency ( 123.3), and topped the conference in interceptions ( 35) and sacks (35), and was second in recovered fumbles ( 12).

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Howard as the new leader of our storied football program,” said Director of Athletics Opio Mashariki. “We believe he is the right person to guide our student-athletes to success both on the field and in the classroom.”

Coach Howard is set to begin his tenure on January 5, 2026. An official press conference will be held in early January.
