Second half surge powers Tennessee State to third straight win

After being down at the half, the Tennessee State basketball team picked it up in the second half, outscoring Tennessee Tech 49-30 on the second half to claim victory, 89-77. 

Tennessee State jumped out to an early 13-4 lead and continued to show the way for the lion’s share of the half. Tennessee Tech took their first lead of the night at 32-30 on Ray Glascow’s shot from downtown with 6:28 left in the opening half. Tech’s time in front was short-lived as Brandon Weston’s layup put TSU back in front 34-32 at the 5:36 mark. 

TTU reclaimed the lead on Ola Ajiboye’s layup that made the score 40-38. The Golden Eagles extended the lead to 47-40 heading into the half, with the last three coming on a trio of Kyle Layton free throws with no time left on the clock as he was fouled by Aaron Nkrumah. 

It took the Tigers just 2:12 to erase the halftime deficit and claim a 48-47 lead on Weston’s layup at the 17:48 mark. Tennessee State led for the balance of the second half, leading by as much as 13 points at 78-65 on their way to an 89-77 victory 

Brandon Weston led five Tigers in double figures with 21 points and added 5 rebounds. Josh Ogundele added 16 points and 7 boards; Carlous Williams, Travis Harper II, and Aaron Nkrumah contributed 14, 13, and 10 points, respectively. 

Kyle Layton led Tennessee Tech with 20 points and 3 rebounds. Jaylon Johnson stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists , while Ola Ajiboye chipped in 12 points along with 8 rebounds. 

Tennessee State (9-12, 5-5), now winners of three straight, will look to keep stacking the Ws and get above .500 in OVC play when they hit the road on January 30 to take on Little Rock. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm CST.
