CHICAGO, Ill. — After a slow start, the Hampton Pirates found their offensive mojo on Saturday and took a 41-20 win over Howard in the 22nd annual Chicago Football Classic at Soldier Field.
Earning MVP honors was Deondre Francois and Christian Angulo. Francois threw for four touchdowns and 217 yards going 11-for-20. Angulo was the defensive honor with five pass breakups and one interception.
The first quarter saw Hampton kept off the board, but once the period turned to the second Hampton clicked. Francois connected with Darran Butts for a 70 yard scoring strike as Hampton took a 7-3 lead just 74 seconds into the quarter.
Francois found Jadakis Bonds on a 68-yard scoring connection with 3:50 left in the half to push the lead to 13-3. Howard responded with a 25-yard Nick Fariss field goal to get back within a touchdown at 13-6 with 71 seconds left.
Butts set Hampton up with another touchdown as he took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the five-yardline. Francois and Bonds connected again on a five-yard scoring pass as Hampton pushed the lead back to 20-6 with 53 seconds remaining. Howard got a late touchdown pass from Caylin Newton to close the first half trailing 20-13.

Coastal Carolina 46, Norfolk State 7
CONWAY, S.C. – Host Coastal Carolina rode a methodical ground game to the tune of 401 rushing yards in a 46-7 win over Norfolk State on Saturday at Brooks Stadium.
In the first-ever meeting between the schools, the Chanticleers (2-1) got 101 rushing yards from C.J. Marable to pull away from the Spartans (1-2), who were playing their second game against an FBS opponent this season. For the game, CCU outgained NSU in total offense, 521-117.
Coastal Carolina cashed in on each of its first three drives. The Chants took the opening kickoff and drove 52 yards in 11 plays for a 41-yard Massimo Biscardi field goal with 10:41 left in the first quarter. After holding NSU three-and-out, CCU marched 56 yards in 12 plays, with Reese White scoring on a 1-yard TD run following a Spartan penalty which kept the drive alive.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — When former walk-on Jimmy Murphy scored his first career touchdown in the closing minutes for the Miami Hurricanes, he was tackled by an exuberant teammate, rose and performed a running handspring, climbed onto the bench, waved some team bling and pounded his chest.
He also drew a 15-yard penalty for excessive celebrating. Teammates didn’t mind.
“I give it a 10,” quarterback Jarren Williams said.
The Hurricanes had reason to celebrate excessively Saturday. After starting the season with two losses for the first time since 1978, they gave rookie coach Manny Diaz his first victory by beating Bethune-Cookman 63-0.
Williams threw for 254 yards and three scores. DeeJay Dallas ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns. Miami outgained the Wildcats 590-137 and held them to four first downs.

#2 James Madison 63, Morgan State 12
HARRISONBURG, Va. — Ben DiNucci matched his career high with four touchdown passes and James Madison rolled past Morgan State 63-12 on Saturday.
DiNucci was 18-of-23 passing with 240 yards. After lofting a 9-yard pass over a defender and into the arms of Devin Ravenel for the game’s first score he threw for three scores in a 28-point second quarter: a 48-yarder to Brandon Polk on a post pattern, a swing pass to Jawon Hamilton that turned into a 50-yard score and a 19-yarder to running back Solomon Vanhorse.
DiNucci’s final two passes came after a lightning delay that lasted over an hour as the stadium was cleared.
Percy Agyei-Obese rushed for two touchdowns for the Dukes and backup quarterbacks Cole Johnson and Gage Moloney each passed for a TD. Ravenal also grabbed an onside kick and returned it 43 yards to score.
The Dukes (2-1), ranked second in the FCS, had 507 yards of offense while their defense held the Bears to 2 of 13 on third-down conversions.

Delaware State 58, Lincoln (PA) 12
Dover, Del. (Sep. 14, 2019) — Delaware State scored touchdowns on each of its four first quarter possessions and were never threatened in a 58-12 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) in the Hornets’ 2019 home opener at Alumni Stadium today. DSU won at home for the fourth straight game to even its at record at 1-1 this season. The Division II Lions fell to 0-2.
Freshman quarterback Tylik Bethea, making his first collegiate start, completed 16-of-28 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Kwannah Kollie (jr.) had nine catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns, each a career-high, to lead the Hornet offense.
Defensively, Delaware State held Lincoln to -24 yards rushing and 175 total offensive yards. The Lions did not record a first down until the opening drive of the third quarter.
On special teams, Keenan Black (sr.), a former quarterback now playing on defense, returned three punts for 88 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown; and added a 61-yard kickoff return.

Florida A&M 57, Fort Valley State 20
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Ryan Stanley threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns as the Florida A&M University football team cruised to a 57-20 victory over Fort Valley State in the Third Annual Jake Gaither Classic on Saturday night at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
After a slow start, the Rattlers (1-1) exploded for 33 second-quarter points and took a commanding 40-0 lead into the break. The 57 points at home was the most Florida A&M had scored on an opponent since a 60-10 victory over Norfolk State on Oct. 25, 2003.
FAMU broke the 0-0 tie late in the first quarter as Davonne Kendrick scored on a 2-yard run to give the Rattlers a 7-0 lead with 1:53 left.
Florida A&M extended the advantage to 14-0 after an Eddie Tillman 7-yard touchdown run with 14:25 remaining in the first half and pushed the margin to 21-0 as Stanley connected with Azende Rey for a 31-yard TD strike with 10:22 left.

TAMPA, FLA— South Florida defense pushed the Bulldogs offense to the limits forcing a game-high eight turnovers, which resulted in a 55-16 victory over South Carolina State Saturday (Sept.14th) at Raymond James Stadium.
South Florida set a school record forcing five fumbles and three interceptions on the day.
“It’s tough when you turn the football over as many times as we did tonight,” said head coach Buddy Pough. “We made a lot of mental errors that resulted in South Florida taking advantage of our mistakes which resulted in win for them.”
“We have to fix whatever the problem is and get things back on track and be ready for conference play in a few weeks,” Pough noted.
SC State jumped on the board first on a 25-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Dillon Bredesen at the 7:15 mark in the first quarter. The Bulls responded with a 42-yard bomb from Jordan McCloud to Johnny Ford to give USF a 7-3 lead with 5:05 remaining in the quarter.
South Florida dominated the second quarter scoring 17 unanswered points on the Bulldog defense. Junior kicker Coby Weiss got things rolling for the Bulls on a 20-yard field goal at the 14:16 mark to push the lead 10-3.

North Carolina A&T scored twenty-one fourth quarter points to defeat Charleston-Southern 27-21 Saturday night.
Jah-Maine Martin’s career-high 299 yards on 25 carries helped NCA&T secure the win.
Gardner-Webb 21, North Carolina Central 12
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Jayln Cagle had 141 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 23 carries and Gardner-Webb beat North Carolina Central 21-12 on Saturday night to snap a four-game skid dating to last season.
Darien Reynolds had 13 total tackles, including one for a loss, two passes defended and two quarterback hurries. The junior linebacker has 35 stops this season for Gardner-Webb (1-2).
NCCU (0-3) failed to convert a fourth-and-2 at the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 38 on the first possession of the second half and, after it looked like the Eagles forced a three-and-out, a roughing the kicker penalty extended Gardner-Webb’s ensuing drive. Jordan Smith hit Izaiah Gathings for a 43-yard gain two plays later to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Cagle to make it 14-9 and the Eagles trailed the rest of the way.
Adrian Olivo, who earlier made field goals of 21, 24 and 40 yards, hit a 32-yarder to made it 14-12 with 6:29 to play but Cagle scored on a 65-yard run to cap the scoring 52 seconds later.
