The South East Melbourne Phoenix is shooting a league-leading 38.46% from beyond the arc this season.
That is set to improve with the addition of sharpshooting import Devondrick Walker.
The 27-year-old Texan officially became the Phoenix’s replacement for import centre Keith Benson today and will add to the teams already impressive offensive arsenal.
“I’m excited to join the Phoenix; it’s a new club with a healthy aspiration of getting to the top of the playoffs. Every game matters at this point so it’s an exciting time of year for the club, and I’m honoured to be a part of it,” Walker said.
The 196cm wing player has flirted with the NBL in the past; he signed with the Perth Wildcats for the 2017-18 season before a foot injury prevented him from making his NBL debut.
“It seems a bit surreal after missing the opportunity to play for Perth a few seasons ago till now playing my first NBL game against Perth. We all know the NBL is a great environment, so I’m excited to see and enjoy the moment,” he said.
He has most recently plied his trade in France’s top league and spent the previous four seasons in the NBA G-League, named Most Improved Player in the 2016-2017 season.
He has also crossed paths with Phoenix captain Mitch Creek, with the pair suiting up together for the Utah Jazz Summer League team in 2017.
“We’re excited to add someone of Devondrick’s character and ability to the team. He’s athletic a great shooter and can defend multiple positions,” Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer said. “He’s also from all reports a great guy so will fit in with our group well.”
Walker arrives in Australia this week and the Phoenix hope to suit him up for Friday’s game against the Perth Wildcats.“
