Winchester, Virginia is the scene for the latest edition of how sneaker lust can lead one down a deleterious path , or as we like to call it, Stupid Things People Do For Sneakers.
On September 20 Tavious Jonte Lane, of Berryville, VA pleaded guilty in Frederick County Circuit Court to a September 8, 2017 robbery.
At gunpoint, Lane robbed a man of sneakers who had been advertising them on Instagram.
According to Daniel H. Cohan, an assistant Frederick County commonwealth’s attorney, the victim of the robbery Eric Truong, knew Long through playing basketball with him in the past. Cohan told Judge N. Randolph Bryant that Truong went to meet Lane at Twin Mart, a local convenience store. Lane arrived in a car driven by a woman that Cohan did not identify. Lane and Truong shook hands and then Truong handed Lane one of the shoes.
According to Cohan, the victim says he heard Lane rack the slide of a semiautomatic pistol. Lane pointed the pistol at Truong and said,”Let me get that.” Truong gave Lane the other sneaker and the female and Lane drove off.
In the plea bargain, Lane pleaded guilty to robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a robbery. Lane is schedule to be sentenced at 9 a.m. on December 12. According to his attorney Micheal Seck, state sentencing guidelines recommend between four years and nine months to eight years and five months.
