Tennessee State dropped a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference game ,but the Homecoming Game, to Austin Peay 21-17. The Tigers would ultimately put themselves in a 14-3 hole, which they would dig themselves out, but eventually came up short.
TSU got off to a bad start, fumbling on their first possession, giving APSU the football on the 20. Austin Peay would only need 5 plays to cash in, reaching the end zone on a 3 yard run by Kentel Williams. The PAT put the Governors up 7–0. Later in the first quarter, Tennessee State got on the board with a Coby Weiss 39 yard field goal to make the score 7-3.
Both teams’ defenses pitched a shutout in the second quarter and the score remained 7-3 at the half.
Austin Peay built the lead to 14-3 with a 1 yard touchdown run by Prince Momodu that capped a 10 play drive that took 5:16 off the clock. Following Terrell Peterson’s second interception of the season, the Tiger offense got down to the two-yard line, but was unable to punch it in but they caught the Governors off guard with a fake field that featured Patrick Smith completing a touchdown toss to long-snapper Thomas Newbold. The point-after brought the Tigers to within four at 14-10.
Tennessee State would take their first lead of the day in the fourth quarter after a 7-play, 91-yard drive that ended with a Micheal Hughes 66 yard touchdown connection with DeVon Johnson. The PAT made it 17-14. Austin Peay wold reclaim the lead for good on a two-yard touchdown run by Ahmaad Tanner with 1:26 to go in the game.
Austin Peay (4-3, 3-1 OVC) have their homecoming next week; they will be hosting Southeast Missouri. Kickoff time is 4:00 P.M. CST. Tennessee State will have a week off before traveling to Cookeville, Tennessee to take on Tennessee Tech in OVC action. Kickoff is 1:30 P.M. CST.
