Tennessee State Lady Tigers pull upset in season finale over UT Martin

Although this season didn’t pan out as hoped, the Lady Tigers of Tennessee State University, powered by a decisive 21-0 run, were able to finish the 2025-26 campaign on a positive note with a 67-60 victory over UT Martin. 

Tennessee State was able to turn UT Martin over 25 times, which turned into TSU points. Tennessee State also cleaned the offensive class, outrebounding Martin 13 to 7, and winning the second chance points battle 14 to 8. Though their offense was not firing on all cylinders, TSU, aided by the UT Martin turnovers, was able to get out in transition and get easy baskets, as they scored 23 points on the break, as compared to just 6 for the Skyhawks. 

Martin jumped out to an 8-0 lead before TSU finally got on the board via an Erin Martin jumper at the 6:55 mark. After the Lady Tigers trimmed the lead to 8-5, the Lady Skyhawks went on a 10-0 run to push the lead big into 18-5 with 2:22 left in the quarter. The Lady Tigers outscored the Skyhawks 5-1 over the rest of the period to get the deficit under double figures as the game headed into the second quarter. 

UT Martin built a 14-point lead at 24-10 at the 7:33 mark and appeared to be on the verge of seizing m. control of the contest. Tennessee State, playing from underneath, soon trimmed the lead to double digits as Martin committed 8 turnovers in the period. 

Aaniya Webb’s three-pointer as time expired cut the Skyhawks’ lead to 34-29 at the half. 

After Martin took a 39-29 lead on a 21-point run 

Put them up 50–39 what is 71 seconds remaining in the first half? Brittney Wells three-pointer as time expired in the first half not only stopped the bleeding but trimmed the Tigers’ lead back to single digits at 50 to 42 as the game headed into its final act. 

Tennessee State built as much as a ten-point advantage at 61-51; the Lady Skyhawks drew as close as 62-60 following Brittani Wells’ three-pointer with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tigers held on for the win. 

Aaniya Webb led the Lady Tigers with 18 points but shot just 6-23 from the field. Erin Martin posted a double-double with 16 points and a team high 13 rebounds and Somah Kamara added 13 points and 5 rebounds. 

Tennessee State finished the season 5-24 overall and 4-16 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
