Week 6 of Dr. Cavil’s Inside the HBCU Sports Lab Major Division Women’s Basketball Top 5 saw a fair amount of shuffling in polls, with a new entrant into the top 5.
5. Norfolk State Lady Spartans ( 11-12, 6-2)
The Lady Spartans enter this week’s polls at No. 5 after being outside of the top 5 the previous week. Norfolk State went 1-0 last week, defeating North Carolina Central 58-45 in their lone outing. The Lady Spartans are currently second in the MEAC, trailing Howard.
4. Alcorn State Lady Braves (12-10, 9-2)
Alcorn State falls a spot in the weekly rankings. The Lady Braves split a pair of games, winning a closely contested matchup at Mississippi Valley State, 75-72, and falling at UAPB 64-60. The loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff ended Alcorn’s 7-game win streak. The Lady Braves are second in the SWAC, behind only Alabama A&M.
3. Howard Lady Bison (17-7, 7-1)
The Lady Bison of Howard University move up a spot in the polls to No.3. In their only outing during the week, Howard defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 85-66. Reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, guard Ariella Henigan recorded 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a blocked shot in the victory over the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bison are currently atop the MEAC.
2. Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (14-11 7-1)
Maryland Eastern Shore falls from the top spot to No.2 in this week’s rankings.
UMES went 2-1 in their three outings, starting the week out with a 69-62 defeat at the hands of North Carolina Central before rebounding to close the week strong with a 73-53 win over South Carolina State and a 66-53 victory over Morgan State.
1. Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs ( 14-9, 10-1)
The Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M ascended to the top of the weekly rankings. AAMU won both of its contests, defeating Grambling 54-50 and chasing that with a 56-54 win over Southern. Coach Dawn Thornton’s team is the hottest in the SWAC, as they are in the midst of a 10-game winning streak.
