TALLAHASSEE, FL —Ivet Subirats put the Florida A&M women’s basketball team ahead for good with five seconds to go the extra period to give the Rattlers a 77-75 win over the Tuskegee Golden Tigers at home Monday.

The Rattlers (2-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Paulla Weekes, who had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ahriahna Grizzle tacked on 18 points and six steals and Dylan Hortonhelped out with 13 points.

Florida A&M out-rebounded Tuskegee 44-35 in Monday’s game, led by Weekes’ 10 boards. The Rattlers also pulled down 16 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second chance points.

Florida A&M forced 23 Tuskegee turnovers. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Grizzle’s six steals led the way for Florida A&M.

How It Happened

Florida A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 22-19.

Tuskegee kept adding to that lead, building a 30-23 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Jamaryn Blair, to take a 33-30 lead. The Rattlers proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 39-33 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Florida A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Grizzle, to expand its lead further to 46-35 with 6:53 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Rattlers still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-50 edge. Florida A&M took advantage of seven Tuskegee turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of takeaways.

Florida A&M then surrendered that advantage as Tuskegee forced overtime by tying things up at 67-67 by the end of the fourth. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.

Florida A&M then took care of business in extra time, outscoring Tuskegee 10-8 to seize victory by the 77-75 final score.
