Michael Jordan has not dribbled a basketball on a NBA for 20 years and yet he continues to set records.
The Air Jordan XIII that the consensus greatest player ever wore while scoring 37 points 5 rebounds and 2 assists in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals- a pivotal game in which the Bulls were victorious 93-88 to tie the series at 1 game apiece – were sold at auction for $2,238,000, which was the highest price ever paid for a pair of sneakers.
Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectables, said ithe following in a statement:
“Today’s record-breaking result further proves that the demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to outperform and transcend all expectations. Sotheby’s is extremely proud to hold the world record for most valuable game-worn sports memorabilia at auction and the most valuable sneakers ever sold, both of which — to no surprise — are directly tied to the global icon, Michael Jordan.”
According to Sotheby’s , Jordan gifted the kicks to a Utah Jazz ballboy who was able to track down Jordan’s jacket that had been previously lost. The sneakers are distinct in that they are the only pair of complete pair of NBA Finals game worn Jordan sneakers that have been authenticated and photo matched by the official authenticator of the NBA, the MeiGray group.
In September of last year, a jersey that Jordan wore in Game 1 of the same NBA Finals was sold for a record $10.1 million, the most ever paid for a sports memorabilia item.
