TSU Volleyball gets 3-0 exhibition win over UT Southern

The Tennessee State volleyball team racked up 51 kills on the way to a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-8, 25-15) over the Firehawks of UT-Southern Tuesday in exhibition play home at Gentry Center.

Alondrah Santana-Rodriguez finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Tigers’ offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .625. Alanys Oterocontributed as well by serving up 46 assists. TSU got 24 digs from Jadyn Webb to lead them defensively.

Game Notes

» Freshman Jadyn Webb had a match-high three aces in the win. On defense, the freshman had 24 digs which was also a match-high. 
» TSU put together a solid attacking performance, notching 51 kills in the match.
» The Tigers never trailed on the way to winning the first set 25-17.
» Alondrah Santana-Rodriguez had a match-high 11 kills.
» Tennessee State attackers were helped by a match-high 46 assists from Alanys Otero.

How It Happened

SET 1 | In the most challenging set of the match,  the Tigers took control on the first point and never looked back to win the first set 25-17. TSU went on a 4-0 to open up its biggest lead of eight points, 18-10. UTS managed to cut the lead to 22-17 before a kill from Jayla Holcombe closed out the set. Tennessee State also supplemented its offense with four aces in the opening set. The Tigers had 16 kills in the set, but their ten errors kept it close. 

SET 2 | After their win in the first set, TSU dominated the second set 25-8. UTS got the first point of the set, but the Tigers went on a 10-1 run and never looked back. Seniors Aleksandra Rojecka Santana-Rodriguez were tremendous in the set, both scoring six kills apiece. Rojecka also added two aces. 
Tennessee State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 17 points, to close out the set, totaling 18 kills while only registering two attack errors. The TSU offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Tennessee State then ended the match with a victory in set number three. The Tigers grabbed control of the set early when the score was 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-15. TSU ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 10 points, to close out the set, collecting 17 kills along the way. Tennessee State’s front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four attacks in the stanza.

The Tigers will open the regular season this Friday and Saturday when they travel to play two games in the Western Illinois Tournament.
