The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) women’s cross-country team competed in its second meet of the season at the Ave Maria Invitational in Ave Maria, Florida. The race featured a mixture of regional National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I and II institutions.
Sophomore runner, Gabrielle Quetel completed the 3.7-mile course in 39:02.01. With her pace during the six-kilometer race, Quetel clocked a time of 32:10.10 at the five-kilometer mark. The Virgin Islands native improved her time by over three minutes after completing the five-kilometer race at the Embry Riddle Cross country classic last month in 35:35.5.
“There was a strategy adjustment made in this race for Gabrielle, and it worked out well for her,” said head coach Dale Joseph. “This is just her second time running this distance and I look forward to seeing her continual growth as the season progresses.”
Freshman Emma Alexander was forced to exit the race prematurely for the second consecutive meet. Unable to complete the course due to injury, Alexander was given a “did not finish” designation as a result of a lingering injury that continues to plague the runner.
Florida International University won the meet with a score of 46 and a total time of 1:57:14 while averaging a time of 23:27 among their runners.
The Buccaneer teams are scheduled to wrap up their regular season on October 11 participating in their biggest meet yet, the Florida State University’s Cross-Country Invite at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.
