Powered by 21 offensive rebounds and 14 three-pointers, the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State were able to defeat Glenville State 88-71 to advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic Region Tournament.
WSSU jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Wonder Nyoyock’s layup finally put Glenville on the board. The Lady Pioneers would draw to within 13-9; however, the Lady Rams’ defense thwarted Glenville’s efforts, forcing six turnovers in the frame, as WSSU took a 21-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Lady Pioneers, continuing to play from underneath, would trim the WSSU lead down to 37-36 on Nylah Davis’ layup at the 3:34 mark. A 9-0 spurt, largely built on three-point shooting and crashing the offensive glass pushed the lead to 46-36 with 1:22 remaining in the half.
WSSU took a 48-38 lead into halftime.
Glenville trimmed the Lady Rams’ advantage to single digits but could make no further inroads as WSSU answered with timely rebounds and scores that rebuffed the potential runs before they gained traction.
In the latter portion of the quarter, Winston-Salem pushed the advantage to as much as 14 points and took a 69-56 lead into the fourth quarter.
Glenville was not able to make any headway, with the lead fluctuating between 12 and 14 points. However back-to-back threes from Alana Biosse made the score 82-63 with 4:59 remaining and effectively put the nail in Glenville’s coffin.
Neveah Farmer led four WSSU players in double figures with 22 points. Maia Charles posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds; Makayla Waleed added 15 points and Breonna Roaf chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds.
