The mere fact that the Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly engaging in exploratory trade discussions involving Ja Morant is noteworthy. However, what may be even more telling is the type of package reportedly being discussed.
According to reports, the New Orleans Pelicans have expressed interest in acquiring Morant, with a potential framework centered around Jordan Poole’s expiring contract and young guard Jordan Hawkins. While discussions are said to be exploratory, the reported proposal has sparked debate regarding Morant’s current value around the NBA.
Just a few years ago, Morant was viewed as one of the league’s brightest young superstars. The former No. 2 overall pick earned multiple All-Star selections, won NBA Most Improved Player honors, and helped transform the Grizzlies into a perennial playoff contender.
Today, the conversation appears much different.
League executives reportedly view Morant’s trade value has plummeted due to a combination of a series of off the court knucklehead events and injuries/questions about his long-term availability. While Morant remains one of the NBA’s most electrifying players when healthy, the risk associated with acquiring him may be preventing teams from offering the type of blockbuster package typically commanded by a franchise cornerstone.
For Grizzlies fans, that reality creates a difficult dilemma.
On one hand, trading Morant now could represent selling at the lowest point of his market value. On the other, Memphis must determine whether its future is best built around Morant, or alongside rising stars such as Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane.
The reported Pelicans discussions may ultimately lead nowhere. However, they offer a glimpse into how the rest of the league currently values a player who was once considered untouchable.
The bigger question facing Memphis isn’t whether Morant can still play at an All-NBA level. It’s whether the organization believes his value will ever be higher than it is today—or whether patience could eventually restore the market for one of the franchise’s most talented players.
