Caitlin Clark’s competitive fire has helped make her one of the WNBA’s brightest stars, but it has also left her walking a disciplinary tightrope.
The Indiana Fever guard picked up her seventh technical foul of the season during Thursday’s 123-88 victory over the Connecticut Sun, leaving her just one technical foul away from an automatic one-game suspension under WNBA rules.
Following the game, Clark explained exactly what led to the technical.
According to Clark, Connecticut guard Saniya Rivers had been talking throughout the contest. After Indiana had firmly taken control of the game, Clark said she simply pointed toward the scoreboard in response.
“I was just telling her to look at the scoreboard,” Clark explained after the game.
While the exchange earned her another technical foul, Clark didn’t appear overly concerned, instead acknowledging that playing with emotion is part of who she is. At the same time, she understands she’ll need to strike a balance as the Fever continue their push toward the postseason.
That balance has become increasingly important.
Clark now sits one technical foul shy of an automatic suspension, meaning any future technical during the regular season would force her to miss a game—a potentially significant loss for an Indiana team that has emerged as one of the WNBA’s top contenders.
With playoff positioning still on the line, every technical foul from this point forward carries added weight. Clark’s intensity is one of the traits that has fueled her rapid ascent, but for the remainder of the regular season, she’ll have little margin for error.
