Texas Southern appears poised to name its next leader on the sidelines.
Pending approval by the university’s board, Texas Southern intends to finalize a deal to hire Corey Lowery as its next head men’s basketball coach, according to multiple reports.
Lowery joins the Tigers after spending the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Seton Hall. During his tenure in South Orange, he was part of a coaching staff that recorded 42 victories over its first two seasons together—the most wins by a first-year coaching staff through its initial two seasons in program history.
While Lowery has gained valuable experience in the Big East, he is no stranger to HBCU basketball.
Before arriving at Seton Hall, Lowery served as the head coach at Lincoln University (Pennsylvania), an HBCU and member of the CIAA. His first season with the Lions began with a promising 3-0 record before the campaign was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021-22, his first full season at Lincoln, Lowery guided the Lions to an 18-10 overall record and a second-place finish in the CIAA Northern Division. The Lions dramatically outperformed expectations after being picked to finish 10th in the conference’s preseason poll.
For his efforts, Lowery was named CIAA Coach of the Year and earned the honor of coaching in the inaugural HBCU All-Star Game, further cementing his reputation as one of the rising coaching talents in HBCU basketball.
If officially approved, Lowery will inherit one of the SWAC’s premier basketball programs. Texas Southern has established itself as a perennial conference contender with multiple NCAA Tournament appearances over the past decade, and the university will be counting on Lowery’s blend of HBCU head coaching experience and high-major assistant coaching success to keep the Tigers among the league’s elite.
An official announcement is expected once the university’s board grants final approval.
