The Miami Heat are adding a familiar face for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
After spending the past eight seasons as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, former NBA All-Star Vin Baker is joining Erik Spoelstra’s coaching staff in Miami, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.
Baker’s arrival gives the Heat another member of Giannis’ inner circle as the two-time MVP begins a new chapter in Miami. Baker and Antetokounmpo developed a close bond during their time together in Milwaukee, both professionally and personally.
From Milwaukee to Miami
Baker joined the Bucks’ coaching staff in 2018 and spent eight seasons with the organization. During that time, he was part of Milwaukee’s 2021 championship-winning staff and worked closely with Antetokounmpo as the superstar developed into one of the NBA’s most dominant players.
Now, Baker will bring that experience to Spoelstra’s staff as Miami builds around Antetokounmpo.
The move could be particularly valuable as Giannis adjusts to a new organization after spending his entire NBA career with Milwaukee. Having a trusted voice who understands his personality, work habits and game could help ease that transition.
Baker has also spoken openly about his personal journey and overcoming alcohol addiction, something that helped strengthen his relationship with Antetokounmpo.
A Significant Addition for Spoelstra
For Spoelstra, adding Baker brings an experienced former player and championship-winning assistant to an already respected coaching staff.
Baker played 13 NBA seasons and was a four-time All-Star before transitioning into coaching. He was selected eighth overall by Milwaukee in the 1993 NBA Draft and also played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers.
His familiarity with Giannis could make him an especially important member of Miami’s staff heading into the 2026-27 season.
