WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has officially announced that she will retire at the end of 2026, bringing her more than seven-year run as the league’s first-ever commissioner to an end.
“After more than seven years at the WNBA and more than 40 total years in business, I have made the decision to retire as WNBA Commissioner,” said Engelbert. “In 2019, I had the privilege of being appointed the league’s first commissioner and to lead a league with enormous potential yet untapped awareness and significant undervaluation. Over the years, it has been amazing to watch WNBA players thrive and lead the massive cultural surge around women’s sports.”
And this is BIG.
Under Engelbert, the WNBA experienced unprecedented growth — from franchise expansion and record attendance to massive increases in viewership, merchandise sales, sponsorship revenue and franchise valuations. The league is also set to grow to 18 teams by 2030.
But Engelbert’s tenure wasn’t without controversy.
She faced criticism from players over communication, player safety, officiating, salaries and the league’s handling of major issues affecting its athletes.
Now she’s walking away.
