Former Purdue star Trey Kaufman-Renn has entered the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.
The development comes just one day after Kaufman-Renn was granted a temporary restraining order allowing him to pursue a sixth season of college basketball while his eligibility case against the NCAA moves forward.
Kaufman-Renn’s situation is particularly unusual because he was selected No. 59 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Rather than immediately beginning his professional career, the former Boilermaker is now seeking another opportunity at the college level.
Kaufman-Renn was one of Purdue’s most important players last season, averaging 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while helping the Boilermakers make another deep NCAA Tournament run.
The 6-foot-9 forward spent five seasons at Purdue and developed from a reserve into one of the program’s top players. His decision to enter the portal now gives other programs an opportunity to pursue a player with extensive high-level college experience.
However, there is still a major question surrounding his 2026-27 season.
The TRO temporarily allows Kaufman-Renn to pursue his sixth season, but his eligibility is not yet permanently resolved. A subsequent hearing regarding a preliminary injunction is expected to determine whether he can continue playing while the legal proceedings unfold.
That makes Kaufman-Renn one of the most unusual names to ever hit the transfer portal: an NBA Draft pick who could potentially return to college basketball.
His next destination could become one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
