NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State kicker Marco Peery has added another honor to his record-setting performance against Hampton.
Peery was named a Fred Mitchell Award Kicker of the Week for Week 3 after converting all five of his field-goal attempts in Norfolk State’s 42-21 victory over Hampton in the 61st Battle of the Bay.
The junior from Norfolk, Virginia, connected on field goals of 21, 48, 26, 46 and 27 yards, including a career-long 48-yarder.
His five made field goals established a Norfolk State single-game record for an individual kicker and matched the school record for field goals made by a team. Peery also added three extra points and finished with 18 points, accounting for nearly half of the Spartans’ scoring.
The 48-yard field goal surpassed Peery’s previous career long of 40 yards, which he set one week earlier against Virginia.
Peery’s 26-yard field goal as the first-half clock expired capped a 12-play, 77-yard drive and gave Norfolk State a 22-14 halftime lead.
Peery was one of three kickers selected for the Fred Mitchell Award’s Week 3 honor, joining Nebraska-Kearney’s Kaden Kiernan and Dartmouth’s Owen Zalc.
The Fred Mitchell Award recognizes collegiate place-kickers from FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA programs for excellence on the field, as well as character and community service. More than 750 programs are eligible.
Peery also received Stats Perform FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week honorable mention for his performance against Hampton.
Norfolk State improved to 2-2 with the victory and will travel to face Chicago State on Sept. 26.
