Alcorn State takes SWAC crown 23-21 over Jackson State

JACKSON, Mississippi —Behind an impressive defensive showing that held the Jackson State offense to 84 rushing yards, Prairie View A&M took down the Tigers 23-21 on the road Saturday afternoon to win the 2025 SWAC Championship

The Panthers improved to 10-3 on the year and 8-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers fell to 9-3 and 7-2.

Cameron Peters led Prairie View A&M’s passing attack with 294 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown and one interception. The signal caller also added 100 yards and one touchdown on the ground and was named the 2025 SWAC Offensive MVP of the game.

To go along with Peters’ showing, Chase Bingmonadded to the Panthers’ rushing attack by picking up 23 yards in the game.

Peters’ most prolific target in the ballgame was Jyzaiah Rockwell, who caught four passes for 96 yards. Ethan John got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in one ball for 66 yards.

Darrell Starling showed out for the Prairie View A&M defense, collecting eight tackles, 1.0 TFL, 0.5 sacks, and one interception. Team added and Rockwell had in the win.  Starling was named the SWAC Defensive MVP of the game.

The Panthers forced one turnover in Saturday’s contest, with Prairie View A&M turning that takeaway into three points. The Prairie View A&M offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 47.6 percent of third-down attempts going 10-for-21 on the day.

Defensively, Prairie View A&M held up fairly well against the Jackson State offensive attack, holding the Tigers to 244 total yards.How It Happened

Prairie View A&M scored first and jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter.Jackson State then tied the game at 7-7 before the Panthers responded with a 19-yard field goal from to jump back ahead 10-7.

Prairie View A&M kept Jackson State off the scoreboard and increased its lead to 13-7 with :07 left in the second quarter.The Panthers continued to extend their lead, scoring again to go up 16-7.

Prairie View A&M continued to expand its lead after Jackson State made it a 16-14 game, scoring again with 3:21 left in the third quarter make the score 23-14. Prairie View A&M didn’t score again and Jackson State tacked on seven more points to finish off the game.Game Notes
