The veteran sportscaster announced that the 2026–27 NBA season will be his final season hosting the iconic basketball studio show, bringing an end to a remarkable 37-season run.
“This will be my last season. Totally my decision. It’s just time,” Johnson said in his announcement.
Johnson has been the heart of Inside the NBA since 1990, helping transform the program into one of the most celebrated studio shows in sports television. His chemistry with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal has helped make the show a fan favorite for generations of basketball fans.
The program has become known for its mix of basketball analysis, hilarious exchanges, candid opinions and unforgettable moments. Johnson’s ability to balance the personalities around the desk while keeping the show moving has been a defining part of its success.
After TNT lost its NBA broadcasting rights, Inside the NBA moved to ESPN and ABC, with TNT Sports continuing to produce the show. Johnson and the crew have carried their signature chemistry into the program’s new home.
However, Johnson’s departure does not mean he is retiring from broadcasting altogether. He has indicated that he plans to continue working on other sports projects, including March Madness coverage and assignments with TNT and CBS.
Johnson leaves behind an extraordinary legacy built on professionalism, humor and a genuine love for sports storytelling.
Salute to Ernie Johnson for 37 incredible seasons at the desk.
Can anyone ever replace the chemistry of Ernie, Chuck, Kenny and Shaq?
