With award season winding down, Norfolk State star Camille Downs has added one more recognition to her resume before the summer. Downs was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Second Team, the organization announced on Thursday.
The Fredericksburg, Virginia native has racked up accolades entire season. Downs averaged a conference-best 3.3 steals per game, ranking fourth in the country on her way to being named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year. She became just the fourth player in NSU history to record 10 steals in a single game, reaching the mark in the Spartans’ win over Morgan State on Jan. 24.
An efficient rebounder, Downs pulled in 10+ boards on five occasions last season. She posted double-doubles against South Carolina State and N.C. Central, earning MEAC Player and Defensive Player of the Week at the same time. She received seven MEAC weekly honors, earning POTW three times and DPOTW on four occasions.
In addition to her defensive prowess, Downs shined on the offense end as a three-level scorer. She averaged 12.7 points per game, dropping a career-high 28 points against N.C. Central on Jan. 10. Downs sent the Spartans to the MEAC championship game, sinking a turnaround fadeaway jumper as the buzzer sounded against Morgan State in the semifinals.
