Dover, Del.  (Feb. 22, 2023) — The Delaware State women’s lacrosse team fell just short of a history-making 3-0 start to the season, dropping an 11-10 decision to Presbyterian at Drass Field on the DSU Downtown campus today.

The Blue Hose broke a 9-9 tie with two goals during a less than two-minute span of the fourth quarter, and held off a late charge by the Hornets to improve to 1-1 this season.

Delaware State pulled to within 11-10 on a goal by Saniya Craft with 2:28 left in the game, but could not get another possession before time expired. The Hornets were looking to open the ’23 campaign with three straight victories after winning the season opener and their second game for the first time in team history.

“Our effort in all three games this season has been outstanding, but we’re still growing, and learning how to close out games, ” said Delaware State head coach Pam Jenkins. “These games build toughness, and will aid us as we continue to rebuild this program.”

Delaware State is now 0-7 all-time against Presbyterian. The Blue Hose outscored the Hornets by a margin of 19-10 in the previous six meetings. The score was tied at 2, 4, 7, 8 and  9 during the game.

Craft led the Hornets with four goals, while Rosella Nardi, Ebony Reddick and Zahra Smith tallied two each for the Hornets in the contest. Abby Edmisten tied for game-high honors with four goals and Willow Hammond added three for Presbyterian. The Hornets led 2-1 on Craft’s first score and she tied the game at 9-9 on her third goal of the game. The Hornets will have a little time off before their next game  on Mar. 5 at St. Francis in Lorretto, Pa.
