Jamal Murray Left Out of Team Canada’s Future Plans as Program Prioritizes Commitment

Team Canada’s men’s basketball program is taking a firm stance on player commitment, and one of the country’s biggest basketball stars is on the outside looking in.

According to Canada Basketball General Manager Rowan Barrett, Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was not included in the national team’s player pool for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and 2028 Olympic cycle because he could not commit to the program’s long-term requirements.

Barrett reportedly stated that Murray is “not committed to the program moving forward,” signaling a major shift in Canada’s approach as it looks to build on recent international success.

The decision is notable given Murray’s stature as one of the nation’s premier basketball talents. The NBA champion has represented Canada on multiple occasions throughout his career and was a member of Canada’s roster at the Paris Olympics. However, his participation with the national team has been sporadic due to injuries, recovery timelines, and NBA commitments.

Murray was not the only notable talent who was a casualty of this new rule , as Andrew Wiggins, Trey Lyles and Sharon Sharpe were also no longer part of the national pool.

Canada Basketball has increasingly emphasized continuity and availability as cornerstones of its program. The organization believes sustained commitment is necessary to compete with international powers such as United States, Serbia, and France on the global stage.

While Murray’s omission does not necessarily close the door forever, it represents a significant moment for a Canadian program that is establishing clear expectations for player participation.

With stars such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett, and Luguentz Dort expected to remain central figures moving forward, Canada appears focused on building a roster around players willing to commit to the full international cycle.
