The future of Klay Thompson in Dallas could become one of the biggest storylines of the NBA offseason.
According to reports, if the Mavericks are unable to find a trade partner for Thompson, his representation could push for a buyout agreement — potentially opening the door for one of the league’s contenders to add a proven veteran shooter.
One team reportedly generating mutual interest is the Miami Heat.
A move to Miami would immediately create one of the most intriguing potential fits in the NBA. Thompson’s greatest strength has always been his ability to stretch the floor, and pairing him with elite playmakers such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo could create opportunities for the five-time All-Star to thrive in a complementary role.
With neither Giannis or Bam known for their shooting prowess, having Thompson on the floor would bring the shooting the Heat now desperately need. Additionally Thompson’s presence could open up the floor for the paint centered attacks of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. .
However, Miami would still have major questions to answer. Thompson is no longer the same defender he was during Golden State’s championship runs, and adding multiple veteran stars would require careful roster construction, depth management and health.
For Thompson, a move to Miami could provide a chance to compete for another championship while playing a role that highlights his greatest skill — knocking down big shots.
For the Heat, adding a player with Thompson’s playoff experience and shooting pedigree could be the type of move that changes the Eastern Conference landscape.
Whether this becomes reality remains to be seen, but a potential pairing of Klay Thompson, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo and possibly LeBron James would instantly become one of the NBA’s most talked-about storylines.
