MEAC announces latest Volleyball Players of the Week

Oct. 31, 2022Maryland Eastern Shore senior Derionah Abner was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State’s Sydney McCree was named Rookie of the Week and Coppin State senior Andrea Tsvetanovanamed Setter of the Week, while Coppin State sophomore Ahzhi Coleman earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.


 
Derionah Abner (5-6, Sr., RS, Orlando, Fla.)

Abner hit a combined .528 in a pair of three-set wins for the Hawks this past weekend, committing just one error in 36 total attempts. She opened the weekend with an error-free eight kills against South Carolina State, hitting .533, before adding a 12-kill, .524 hitting effort against North Carolina Central.


 
Sydney McCree (5-10, Fr., S/OPP, Durham, N.C.) 

McCree recorded a double-double in a five-set thriller against Coppin State, racking up 36 assists and 11 digs. She also had three kills (with no errors in 10 swings), two service aces and two blocks. She averaged 7.2 assists and 2.2 digs per set in the match.


 
Andrea Tsvetanova (5-9, Sr., S, Sofia, Bulgaria) 

Tsvetanova averaged 10.1 assists per set in a pair of wins this past weekend, opening with a 49-assist, 10-dig, 4-kill, 2-block, 1-service ace performance in a five-set win over Norfolk State. Then, in a sweep of Howard, she had 32 assists, eight digs and two aces. With 104 aces on the season, Tsvetanova is tied for the third-highest single-season ace total in MEAC history.


 
Ahzhi Coleman (5-11, So., MB, San Antonio, Texas) 

Coleman averaged 1.5 blocks per set in a pair of wins for the Eagles this past weekend. She opened with seven blocks in a five-setter against Norfolk State, before turning in five more blocks in a sweep of defending MEAC champion Howard.
 
Other Top Performers
Kennedy Beatty (Coppin State)had a season-high 10 digs and two service aces against Norfolk State.
 
Miajavon Coleman (Coppin State) racked up 16 kills and 17 digs in a five-set win over Norfolk State.
 
Malgorzata Andersohn (Delaware State) had 24 assists and 11 digs against North Carolina Central.
 
Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State)had 26 digs against North Carolina Central.
 
Valeria Otero (Delaware State)had 12 kills and nine digs against North Carolina Central, before adding nine kills and nine digs against South Carolina State.
 
Sophia Chacon (Maryland Eastern Shore) had a weekend-high 22 assists against North Carolina Central.
 
Isil Yilmaz (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 15 digs against North Carolina Central and 10 against South Carolina State.
 
Makila Billingsley (Morgan State)hit .444 and had 11 kills against Norfolk State.
 
Trinity Carruthers (Morgan State)racked up 31 assists and 12 digs against Norfolk State.
 
Alyssa Sampson (Morgan State)recorded 13 digs each against Howard and Norfolk State.
 
Shonte Seale (Norfolk State)recorded double-digit kills against Coppin State (13) and Morgan State (10), while also recording two blocks in each match.
