For Tennessee State, Morehead was a bad thing, as the Tigers dropped their conference opener to the Eagles, 83-75.

The Tigers took an early 3-2 lead off a Dedric Boyd three=pointer; Morehead State responded with nine straight points to seize an 11-3 advantage. Tennessee State would spend the remaining balance of the first half playing uphill, falling behind by as much as fifteen points before ultimately finding themselves in a seven-point deficit at 40-33.

A Marcus Fitzgerald Jr jumper early in the half was the catalyst for an 11-0 run that would put Tennessee State in front at 44-41 with 15:25 remaining in the contest; they would aslso show the way at 45-44 on a Justin Williams free throw. However the Tigers’ time out front would be short lived , as 27 seconds later Mark Freeman’s jumper put the Eagles up 46-45 with 14:20 to go in the second half. Morehead State would lead for the next ten minutes before a JR Clay three-pointer put the Tigers out in front 64-63 with 5:35 left in the ball game. After a Marcus Fitzgerald basket tied the game at 66, the Eagles outscored the Tigers 17-9 over game’s final 4:49 to claim the victory, 83-75.

Mark Freeman lead the victorious Eagles with 30 points on 9-15 FG, including 4-5 from downtown’ Jake Wolfe added 14 points and 2 rebounds, while Drew Thelwell chipped in 2 rebounds along with his 13 points.

JR Clay led four Tigers in double figures with 18 points ; Christian Brown scored 16 points , Marcus Fitzgerald put in 15 and Dedric Boyd chipped in 12. Up next for Tennessee State, who fell to 8-6 and 0-1 in the OVC with the loss is a New Year’s Eve matchup with Little Rock. Tip off is scheduled for 3:30 pm CST.
