BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 10, 2022)—The Morgan State volleyball team concluded the 2022 homecoming festivities with its annual homecoming match on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House against visiting Norfolk State.
The Spartans would spoil the afternoon with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Morgan State. The Spartans improved to 3-11 on the season, 3-1 in the MEAC, while the Lady Bears fell to 2-17, 1-4 MEAC. The loss also ended a four-match winning streak on homecoming for Morgan State.
Offensively, the Lady Bears were led by Makila Billingsley, who finished with seven kills, while Justyus Jackson and Jourdan Pageeach added six. Melanie Battle hit for a match-high .750, recording three kills on four attempts. Defensively, Alyssa Sampson had a match-high 10 digs and Page tallied six. Trinity Carruthers and Mackenzie Jefferson shared the duties at setter and each had 11 assists and five digs.
The Spartans received a match-high 11 kills from Carla Hernandez, who also finished with seven digs. Shonte Seale hit for a team-high .357 with seven kills and Sydney McCree recorded a match-high 32 assists, seven kills and four digs. McCree also had a match-best four service aces and Hernandez added three, as the guests totaled nine aces for the match.
The Lady Bears held a 7.0-5.0 advantage over Norfolk State in blocks. Battle led the way with three blocks, including two solos. Madison Grace also had two solo blocks.
Morgan State will travel to Dover, Del. on Friday, Oct. 14 to take on Delaware State. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. at Memorial Hall. The Hornets (12-4, 2-1 MEAC) picked up their fourth straight victory this season, following a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-12) sweep of South Carolina State on Sunday at home.
