In a season defined by dominance and historic milestones, Nolan Smith has been named the BOXTOROW HBCU Coach of the Year after a remarkable debut campaign at Tennessee State Tigers men’s basketball.
Taking over the program for the first time, Smith orchestrated one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent HBCU basketball history. He led the Tigers to both the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships — a feat the program had not accomplished since 1994.
Tennessee State finished 15-5 in conference play, marking the highest OVC win total in the program’s Division I era and cementing its place atop the league.
The Tigers’ success carried into March, as they earned a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament — the highest seed among the three HBCU programs selected for the 68-team field.
Smith’s impact extended beyond team success, as he developed some of the conference’s top talent. Senior guard Aaron Nkrumah earned OVC Player of the Year honors and was named First Team All-OVC alongside Travis Harper II. Meanwhile, Dante Harris — the lone player Smith personally recruited — secured Second Team All-OVC honors and finished second in the conference in assists.
Adding to his list of accolades, Smith was also named OVC Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Jonathan Mattox. He becomes just the second head coach in Tennessee State history to earn that distinction, joining Frankie Allen, who won the award in the 1992–93 and 1994–95 seasons.
Smith’s immediate success signals a new era for Tennessee State basketball — one that has quickly reestablished the Tigers as a force both within the OVC and across the HBCU landscape.
