The Wagner Seahawks staved off Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Trenton Thunder Ballpark, defeating the Spartans 8-5 to take the series.

After the teams split a Saturday doubleheader, Wagner (13-17, 11-4 NEC) put together a strong offensive showing on Sunday, preventing the Spartans (9-22, 5-10) from coming away with a series victory.

Senior catcher Manny Jackson capped off a spectacular weekend with another dominant showing at the plate, going 5-for-5 on five singles with one RBI.

The Seahawks poured in four runs in the game’s third inning to take control, taking advantage of a Spartan wild pitch and fielding error. Justin Journette responded with a solo shot to left field in Norfolk State’s next trip up to bat, the sophomore’s eighth homer of the season.

After Wagner increased the gap to 5-1, Norfolk State capitalized on a Seahawk error in the fifth. Jamal Ritter drilled an RBI triple to right centerfield, before Jalan Jones singled to bring Ritter home.

The burst pulled Norfolk State within two, but Wagner added three runs in the sixth inning with starter Joe Lafave and reliever Ethan Blakeney on the mound during the frame. Norfolk State got one back in the seventh, as Jackson scored Jones from second, cutting the deficit to 8-4.

Norfolk State struggled to mount a rally from there. The Spartans managed to get a run across the plate in the top of the ninth, but Andrew Stanley entered the game in relief to earn the final out of the afternoon for Wagner.
