Delaware State 28, Norfolk State 7

NORFOLK, Va. – Quarterback C.J. Henry completed 14-of-19 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense pitched a shutout for the first 48 minutes to highlight Delaware State’s 28-7 victory over Norfolk State in the Hornets’ MEAC opener, spoiling the Spartans’ homecoming before more than 22,000 fans at Dick Price Stadium today. 

The Hornets won their second straight game to improve to 4-2 overall, their best six-game mark since 2012.  

The win was Delaware State’s first in an official MEAC opener since a 35-10 victory over Savannah State in 2014, and first official MEAC road win since defeating Norfolk State 13-10 in overtime that same year.    

Henry threw two touchdown passes to Jerrish Halsey and another to NyGhee Lolley.  

The Hornets also rushed for a season-high 204 yards, led by Marquis Gillis with a career-high 123 and touchdown.  

Delaware State’s next home game is Oct. 29 against North Carolina Central in the Hornets’ annual homecoming contest. Start time is set for 2:02 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Rakim White had a career day, catching four passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead South Carolina State to a 36-0 shutout victory over visiting Virginia Lynchburg Saturday inside Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium|Willie Jeffries Field.

Graduate quarterback Corey Fields, Jr. finished throwing 17-of-36 for 263-yards and three touchdowns, while redshirt senior Shaquan Davis had a solid day with seven catches for 76-yards and one touchdown.

The defense played lights out holding the Dragons to four first downs and 22 yards of total offense. Redshirt junior Kendrell Flowers led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 72-yards in the win.

Sophomore linebacker Aaron Smith finished with a team-high six tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles, while Preseason MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Jeblonski Green, Jr., made his presence known with four tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and one sack.

South Carolina State plays host to top-ranked N.C. Central on Saturday at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium/Willie Jeffries Field. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m.

Harvard 41, Howard 25

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard University fell behind by 10 in the first half, then rallied to tie the game at halftime before allowing Harvard to reel off 24 straight points as the Bison dropped a 41-25 decision to Harvard University in the Second Annual Truth and Service Classic at Audi Field.

With starting senior quarterback Quinton Williams out with an injury, Howard (1-5, 0-0 MEAC) turned to sophomore Jaylon Torbert who started his first game.  Following a shaky start, Tolbert rallied his team to the halftime 17-17 deadlock.  He finished the game with a career-high 19 of 26 for 207 yards and two TDs.

The Crimson stifled Howard’s attempt to begin the second half, driving down for a touchdown to open the third quarter and then turning a Howard miscue on special teams into a short field and subsequent score that opened a 31-17 lead at the end of three quarters of play.

The Bison allowed yet another long drive to start the fourth quarter and then committed yet another special team mistake that Harvard (5-1) capitalized to close out the scoring. scores.

Freshman Ja’Shawn Scroggins came off the bench to relieve Tolbert and connected on four of six and capped off the drive with a six-yard scamper that closed out the scoring.

Sophomore safety Kenny Gallop had his best day as a Bison with 16 tackles, 11 of them solos while junior linebacker Christian White added 11.
