Quinn Gray and Albany State are parting ways

Albany State and head football coach Quinn Gray Sr have parted ways. The now former Golden Rams head man put it on wax via a post on social media that in part reads:

“Albany State had been nothing short of amazing to myself and my family by giving me the opportunity to live out my dream of becoming a college head coach. I am forever grateful to Dr. Marion Fedrick for bestowing that opportunity upon me. People often say that you want to leave a place better than you found it, and I pray we did just that!

“As president, I am called to recognize excellence wherever it rises, and Coach Gray’s impact on the Golden Rams has been extraordinary,” said Albany State University President, Dr. Robert Scott. “He made it a point to build a culture defined by discipline, accountability, and academic success. His leadership elevated our program, inspired our student-athletes, and strengthened pride across our campus community. We are grateful for his dedication to Albany State University, and he will always remain a valued member of the Ramily. He leaves with our respect and a heartfelt thank you.”

Golden Rams’ Director of Athletics Dr. Kristene Kelly had this to say: “In college athletics, success naturally creates opportunity. Coach Gray’s success here speaks volumes about the work that has been done at Albany State. We are proud of Coach Gray, and we are equally proud that we have the infrastructure, facilities, and support systems to sustain a winning culture. While we will miss his leadership, we are confident in what has been built and excited about the future of Golden Rams Football.”

In his three seasons at Albany State, Coach Gray compiled a 24-11 overall record and 20-4 in SIAC play. The Golden Rams finished no worse than second in the conference and made appearances in the SIAC Championship in 2023 and 2025, claiming the crown in 2025. In addition to winning the SIAC title, Coach Gray led Albany State to a 12-2 overall mark, the most wins in a single season in program history, and included an unblemished 8-0 run through the SIAC.

The Golden Rams also advanced to the Regional Final of the Division II Playoffs.  The HBCU Division II National Champions also ended the season perched atop Dr. Cavil’s Inside the HBCU Sports Lab Mid-Major Top 7 and the BCSN Under Division I Top 5 rankings.

Assistant coach Anthony Kelly will step in as interim head coach as a national search begin in earnest.
