D’Angelo Russell’s time with the Memphis Grizzlies may be short-lived.
According to Kelly Iko, Russell is not viewed as a long-term piece for the Grizzlies, with both sides expected to work together on a resolution that would allow the veteran point guard to find a new team before the start of the 2026-27 season. That resolution could come in the form of either a trade or a contract buyout.
Russell arrived in Memphis as part of the multi-team deal that reshaped the Grizzlies’ backcourt, but the latest reporting suggests the organization sees him more as a short-term asset than a foundational piece.
A buyout would allow Russell to become an unrestricted free agent and sign with a contender or a team in need of veteran backcourt help. If Memphis can find a trade partner instead, the Grizzlies could potentially recoup assets while clearing salary and opening additional opportunities for their younger guards.
