After stunning Arizona 63-57 on Wednesday, the Southern University women’s hoops team followed up with a wire-to-wire 70-62 win over Houston Sunday afternoon.
Southern took the lead on Mykayla Cunningham’s driving layup on the game’s first possession. The Jaguars maintained the pole position for the balance of the period, taking as much as a 7-point lead. Houston, shot the ball well 50% (5-10) from the field and 66% (2-3) downtown, however, UH was hampered by 6 turnovers in the period.
In the second quarter, the Cougars would pare the Southern lead down to a single bucket on multiple occasions, but in what would serve as a theme on the afternoon, the Jaguars staved off every Houston run and would take a 38-29 lead into halftime.
Southern extended their lead into double digits for the first time in the contest on Demya Porter’s jumper that made the score 43-33 at the 7:27 mark of the third quarter. Houston whittled the deficit down to as little as 5 points, however Southern was able to push the lead back to 10 heading into the game’s final frame.
Southern built their advantage to as much as 16 points at 65-49 on an Anaja Hall free throw. The Jaguars held the Cougars to just 4-12 from the field in the quarter, which stymied any would-be comeback bids as SU went on to claim the 70-62 win.
The Jaguars turned 14 Houston turnovers into 20 points and also had 10 second-chance points, as compared to just 2 for their opponents. They also held the Cougars to just 31% shooting from the field on the evening.
Olivia Delancy and Zaria Hurston led the way for the Jags with 11 points apiece. Every Southern player scored at least 2 points.
Southern (3-5, 0-0) returns to action on December 12 against Southern University at New Orleans.
