Tennessee State locked in defensively in the second half and was able to pull away from South Carolina State to a comfortable win to move to 2-0 on the young season. After being knotted at 35, the Tigers out scored the Bulldogs 45-26 in the second half to cruise to an 80-61 victory.

South Carolina State came out strong, taking a 14-11 lead in the early going,but Tennessee State responded with a 6-0 run to take a 17-14 advantage with 10:10 to go in the opening half. Fur the next nine minutes of game play, South Carolina State would remain in striking distance, but Marc Fitzgerald Jr.’s three-pointer would give Tennessee State their biggest lead lead of the half at 35-26. South Carolina went on a 9-0 ran over the last 1:29 in the half to tie the game at 35 apiece heading into inter mission.

The opening five minutes of the second half saw six lead changes, with SCSU taking a three paint lead at 48-45 on Lesown Hallum’s lay up with 15:06 remaining in the contest. Over the next is minutes, South Carolina State was outscored 35-13, as the TSU defense held SCSU to 35.9% from the floor.

Adong Makuoi’s jumper in the lane put TSU up 60-50 with 8:38 left in the game and from this point forward, the Bulldogs would draw no closer.

Zion Griffin and Jr Clay each had 23 points to lead 4 Tennessee State players who scored in double figures. Hallums lead South Carolina State with 14 points.

Tennessee State returns to action Monday night when they will play host to move bulldogs, with these being or the Alabama A&M variety. Tip off is scheduled for 8pm CST.
