Following a national search, Albany State University has named Todd Triplett head women’s basketball coach, with his appointment effective April 1, 2026.
Serving as interim head coach during a time of transition, Triplett made an immediate and measurable impact. In his first season, he doubled the team’s win total from the previous year and led the Golden Rams to their first winning season since 2017–18.
Guiding a roster that included six freshmen, Triplett established accountability and a defensive identity that translated into success on the court. The Golden Rams advanced to the conference semifinals after defeating nationally ranked Edward Waters University, before falling on a last-second buzzer beater to Lane College.
Albany State led the league in defensive rebounding, averaging 26.8 rebounds per game, a reflection of Triplett’s defensive mindset and emphasis on effort and discipline. His team also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.10 team GPA, while developing All-Conference selection Na’Haviya Paxton and All-Freshman Team honoree Sariah Johnson.
“Coach Triplett distinguished himself through his leadership, the progress of the program, and his vision moving forward,” said Dr. Kristene Kelly, Director of Athletics. “He stepped into a challenging situation and created immediate momentum. The growth we saw this season, in how he led, how the team responded, and the results on the court, was undeniable. We are confident in his ability to continue building a program that reflects the standard and vision we have for Albany State women’s basketball.”
Triplett brings a diverse background to the role, with coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, and international levels. Prior to Albany State, he coached internationally in Mexico and served on the women’s basketball staff at Edward Waters University, with previous stops at Clark Atlanta University and in the high school ranks, where he led West Oaks Academy to a state championship. A former professional player in Europe, Triplett brings a well-rounded perspective to leadership and player development.
“I’m grateful for the trust that Dr. Scott, Dr. Kelly, and the university have placed in me. I’m proud of what our team accomplished this season, and I’m excited about what’s ahead,” said Triplett. “We’re going to continue to grow, compete, and represent Albany State the right way.”
All-Freshman Team selection Sariah Johnson shared her perspective on Triplett’s impact.
“Coach Triplett believed in us from day one and pushed us to be better every day. He’s helped set the tone for what this program can be, and we’re excited to keep building with him,” said Johnson.
Under Triplett’s leadership, the Golden Rams will look to build on this season’s momentum and continue moving the program forward.
He is the proud father of three daughters, Isis, Mesi, and Paris Triplett, and is a dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.
