Zyion Shannon, Sanaa’ St. Andre and Caitlin Anderson combined to score 42 of Tennessee State’s 52 total points, but the Tigers fell to the Cincinnati Bearcats 76-52 on the road Friday.
The Tigers (2-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Shannon, who had 14 points and two steals. St. Andre and Anderson also tacked on 14 points a piece.
Led by Eboni Williams’ three offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 13 second-chance points.
Tennessee State forced 18 Cincinnati turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Friday’s game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Shannon’s two steals led the way for Tennessee State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run with 9:20 left in the first quarter to take a 6-3 lead. The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 19-17.
The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 38-21 halftime deficit.
Cincinnati continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 54-23 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Aaniya Webb, to trim its deficit to 54-29 with 3:02 to go in the third. Cincinnati countered and stretched its lead to 63-36 heading into the fourth. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
Cincinnati kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-41 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Shannon’s three, to shrink the deficit to 73-50 with 1:19 to go in the contest. Cincinnati responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-52. Tennessee State took advantage of five Cincinnati turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
