A day for celebration has been desecrated by tragedy.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade, the celebratory atmosphere turned into one of terror as shots rang out near the end of the parade route, sending spectators scrambling for safety.

Up to 15 people were injured and, unfortunately, one person lost their life in the shooting.

At a news conference, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves discussed the aftermath of today’s event.

“I’m angry at what happened today. The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment.” Graves said.

Chief Graves added that she’d heard some fans may have had a hand in the apprehension of a suspect but could not confirm those accounts.

The Chiefs released a statement that reads in part, “We are saddened by the senseless acts of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City.”

A video posted to social media depicts an apparent shooting victim receiving chest comprsessions, while another lies on the grounds amidst screams. An additional video showed two parade attendees run down and tackle and individual, hlksjng him

dwn until police arrived on the scene.

Unfortunately, today’s incidents are not of an isolated nature. Last year at the Denver Nuggets’ championship a shooting occurred downtown, but police do not think the shooting was related to the celebration. A disagreement in a parking lot resulted in gunplay near the Texas Rangers World Series championship parade. Thankfully this incident resulted in no injuries.
