Week two of 2019 CIAA Football saw all 12 of the conference’s teams in action on the same day for the first time this season. This week’s slate of games featured a pair of matchups against top 25 teams as Virginia Union faced #8 Lenoir Rhyne and Fayetteville State took on #18 Wingate.
Additionally, two non-conference matchups between conference teams took place as Shaw hosted Bowie State and Livingstone opened at home against Elizabeth City State.
Chowan 70, Alderson Broaddus 16 FINAL
After a 40-22 loss in their opener, Chowan bounced back in a major way in week two with a convincing 70-16 win over Alderson Broaddus. ABU would open with a 13-play, 59-yard drive game that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Hawks would respond with the game’s next 14 points, a 20-yard touchdown run from Bryce Whitt followed by a 7-yard pass from Whitt to Imeek Watkins. After an ABU field goal early in the second, the Hawks would score 42 unanswered points that included four touchdown passes from Whitt and a pair of runs for scores from Deshaun Wethington. Whitt went 14-of-22 for 289 yards and an impressive seven touchdown passes while also rushing for 70 yards and a score. Wethington rushed for 194 yards and two scores on 12 carries. Colby Scott’s 10 tackles led the Hawks defense, a unit that produced four picks on the day.

Bowie State 26, Shaw 21 FINAL
A pair of CIAA teams did battle in a non-conference matchup as defending champion Bowie State traveled to take on Shaw, defeating the Bears 26-21 at George Williams Sports Complex in Raleigh. Playing their first home game in Raleigh since 2010, SU jumped out to an 14-3 lead on a pair Torrin Campbell touchdown passes that included a 75-yarder to Marquis Gorham midway through the second quarter. The Bulldogs would respond with a one-yard run for a score by Calil Wilkens after going 68 yards in 13 plays and followed up with a safety on Shaw’s next possession to make the score 14-12 at the half. After scoreless third quarter, a 39-yard run by Gorham would give the Bears a 21-12 lead early in the fourth but a pair of blocked kicks by Bryce Dove contributed to Bowie State scoring 14 points over the game’s final 5 minutes. Gorham finished with 165 yards of total offense (126 receiving, 39 rushing) and two scores while BSU’s Dushon David caught 5 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Mars Hill 46, Saint Augustine’s 14 FINAL
Quarterback Jalen Jones threw a touchdown pass and tailback Jeremiah Miller scored on the ground for Saint Augustine’s University in a 46-14 non-conference football loss to Mars Hill University at Meares Stadium in Mars Hill, N.C. Their touchdowns pulled the Falcons even at 14-14 in the second quarter after trailing 14-0. The Lions scored the game’s final 32 points. SAU’s Jones threw for 149 yards and Miller rushed for 87 yards. A trio of Falcons defenders finished with seven tackles.

#8 Lenoir-Rhyne 28, Virginia Union 11 FINAL
Coming off a huge win over Division I Hampton, Virginia Union failed to maintain that momentum against nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, losing 28-11 in their home opener at Hovey Field in Richmond, VA. The Panthers scored the game’s first and last points of the game, a first quarter 27-yard field from Jefferson Souza and a 2-yard touchdown run courtesy of Tabyus Taylor, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears would deliver 28 points in between those scores, including three touchdowns from Dareke Young (two rushing, one receiving). VUU’s Charles Hall had his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, pulling seven grabs for 132 yards. Sterlin Hammond and Tyrone Glanton led the Panthers defense with 10 tackles apiece.

Livingstone 27, Elizabeth City State 16 FINAL
Livingstone continued their winning ways to start the 2019 season with a 27-16 win over conference foe Elizabeth City State in a non-conference matchup. A Jonathan Buck field goal put the Vikings on the board first but the Blue Bears would run off 27 straight points, including a 54 yard pass from Miles Hayes to Jaylen Askew. ECSU would a couple of touchdowns late in the fourth, a Kevin Caldwell one-yard run and a 5-yard pass from Caldwell to Dajuan Greene, but the Livingstone lead was insurmountable. Hayes threw for 210 yards and teammate Daventa Adams had 8 tackles to lead a Blue Bear defense that gave up just 205 yards. The Vikings Chris Little had five tackles and two tackles for loss, tied for a team-high.

Delaware State 58, Lincoln (PA) 12 FINAL
Freshman Shoye Sampson scored two touchdowns to provide Lincoln University with their only points of the game as they lost, 58-12, to Division I FCS Delaware State. Both touchdowns came in the third quarter, both were 12-yard receptions and both culminated an eight-play 78-yard drive by the Lions, the first of which started with just under ten minutes left in the period. Lions QB Eban Jackson threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns while Islam Abdul-Rabb led the defense with eight tackles.

Catawba 21, Winston-Salem State 14 FINAL
Winston-Salem State totaled 341 yards of total offense, but the effort wasn’t quite enough as the team loss their home opener, 21-14, to Catawba. For the second straight week WSSU took a lead into the fourth quarter, leading the Indians 14-13 thanks to a 1-yard run by Farell Murchison and a Dominique Graves 33-yard pass to Camero Williams, but failed to hold on in the game’s final moments. In addition to the touchdown pass, the sophomore Graves completed 15-of-27 passes for 249 yards. Defensively, Ta’Shaun Taylor led the way for the Rams with nine total tackles (five solo).

Virginia State 35, UNC-Pembroke 16 FINAL
Virginia State claimed their first win of the 2019 season after defeating UNC Pembroke, 35-16, on the school’s “Appreciation Day”, recognizing military and VSU faculty and staff for their hard work and dedication. Despite UNCP taking the opening kickoff 88 yards for the game’s first points, Cordelral Cook took charge offensively for VSU with a six-yard touchdown run and a 68-yard pass to Darius Hagans for a score to take a 14-9 lead into the half. The Braves would pull the game close early in the fourth, 21-16, but the Trojans would respond with two touchdowns, a 55-yard run by Hagans and a 1-yarder by Toure Wallace, to put the game away. Hagans would finish with 202 yards of total offense (134 rushing, 68 receiving) along with his two scores. Na’Shawn Reid-Carlos led the VSU defense with 10 solo tackles.

Johnson C. Smith 34, Benedict 31 FINAL
A pair of Damon Rice kickoff returns for touchdowns was just the spark the Johnson C. Smith University football team needed to get its first win of the 2019 season with a 34-23 victory over Benedict. Rice took the opening kickoff 90 yards and followed that up with a 85-yarder early in the second to tie the game at 21. Down 23-21 late in the third, running back Emanuel Wilson exploded for a 73-yard touchdown run to give the Golden Bulls a 28-23 lead. On JCSU’s next possession, Wilson would add another score on a 64-yard run for 34-23 lead, which would be enough to preserve the victory. Wilson finished with 265 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries while Rice totaled 175 return yards. Tyki Lawson-Oates led the JCSU defense with five solo tackles.

#18 Wingate 34, Fayetteville State 24 FINAL
Fayetteville State had a fast start against 19th-ranked Wingate University, entering halftime tied at 17, but the Broncos were unable to sustain its scoring in the second half as the Bulldogs prevailed, 34-24. FSU got a pair of touchdowns from Tyeous Sharpe, who finished with 82 total yards of offense (64 receiving, 18 rushing). Chrishon Springs and Keyshawn James led the Bronco defense with nine tackles apiece and Nigel Peele returned a 58-yard interception for a score.
