Monday the SIAC has names their latest round of weekly football honourees. Miles’ Claude Newell took Offensive Player of the Week, Mackenzie Howard of Lane was the DPOW. Albany State kicker Gabriel Ballinas was Special Teams Player of the Week and Lane’s Ike Brown, Newcomer of the Week.
OFFENSIVE – Claude Newell III, Miles
Quarterback | 6’4 | Junior | Birmingham, AL
After missing most of the last two games because of injury, Newell came back and completed 15-of-24 passes for a career-high 280 yards and a touchdown in Miles’ 28-21 win over Kentucky State.
DEFENSIVE – Mackenzie Howard, Lane
Linebacker | 5’10 | Sophomore | Harvest, AL
Against Tuskegee, Howard registered six tackles , five of which were solo and one tackle for a loss , n helping the Dragons record their first-ever win over the Golden Tigers.
SPECIAL TEAMS – Gabriel Ballinas, Albany State
Kicker/Punter | Senior | Guadalupe, Mexico
Ballinas connected on all of his field goal attempts (37,40 and 23 yards) in the Golden Rams 30-0 victory over Savannah State. Pull my double-duty as a punter , he averaged 35.5 yards on his four kicks.
NEWCOMER – Ike Brown, Lane
Running Back | 5’10 | Freshman | Shreveport, LA
Brown rushed for 145 yards on 25 carries (5.8 avg.) and two touchdowns as the Dragons defeated Tuskegee for the first time in school history. Brown scored twice with the score tied in the second half, once from 42 yards out and another punch in from 2 yards away.
