Joel Embiid ruled out for remainder of season due to knee issues

More bad news In a season rife with disappointment, Philadelphia 76ers center center Joel Embiid will miss the remainder of the season. The team announced Friday afternoon that Embiid is “medically unable to play.”. According to CBS Sports’ James Herbert, the team and Embiid had been trying to manage the pain and swelling in his left knee.

The full statement:

The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee. After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation. We are working with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan and will update the media when we have more information. The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.

Embiid missed 43 games last season due to having the meniscus repaired in his left knee in February 2024.

His ailing knee has limited Embiid to just 19 games where he has averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists on .444/. 299 / .883 splits. These numbers are a far cry from his production last season in which he averaged 34.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 5.6 assists on .529/.388 /.883 splits.

With Embiid and Paul George, who has missed 19 games, the Sixers have floundered. The Sixers currently sit at 20-38, 12th in the Eastern Conference and riding a four-game losing streak.
