The future of veteran forward DeMar DeRozan with the Sacramento Kings appears increasingly uncertain.
According to reports from HoopsHype insider Michael Scotto, Sacramento is expected to waive-and-stretch DeRozan’s contract if the franchise is unable to find a suitable trade partner.
DeRozan is entering the final season of his contract and is owed $25.74 million. However, only $10 million of that salary is guaranteed, giving the Kings flexibility to utilize the NBA’s stretch provision and spread the cap hit over the next three seasons.
The move would represent another significant step in Sacramento’s apparent organizational reset. After falling short of expectations and entering what many around the league view as a rebuilding phase, the Kings have been exploring avenues to reshape their roster and financial outlook.
Should DeRozan become available on the open market, the Los Angeles Clippers are widely viewed as the frontrunners for his services. The six-time All-Star is a California native, and the Clippers have long been linked to veteran scorers capable of complementing their star core.
Even at 36 years old, DeRozan remains one of the league’s most reliable offensive weapons, averaging 18.4 points , 4.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds. DeRozan can still perform at a very high level, making him a valuable addition for a Clippers team looking to contend in the highly competitive Western Conference.
For Sacramento, the decision will likely come down to whether a trade market develops in the coming days. If not, waiving and stretching DeRozan’s contract could provide the financial flexibility needed to accelerate the franchise’s rebuilding efforts.
