James Harden declines player option, heads to free agency with new deal expected

James Harden is officially headed to free agency after declining his $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season.

While the move makes Harden an unrestricted free agent, there is little expectation around the league that he’ll be changing teams. Instead, the decision is widely viewed as a financial maneuver that allows him and the Cleveland Cavaliers to negotiate a new multi-year contract.

A restructured deal would provide Cleveland with greater salary cap flexibility while allowing the franchise to keep one of its biggest stars in place as it continues its pursuit of an NBA championship.

Harden remains one of the league’s premier playmakers and offensive engines. After being traded to the Cavailiers on February 4, Harden appeared in 26 contests, putting up per game numbers of 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds ; overall, 36 year old averaged 23.6 points, 8.0 assists and 4.8 rebounds per contest. Despite putting up solid numbers, as has often been the case with Harden, with the onset of the postseason is his annual decline in performance, as he put up 19.2 points, 8.6 assists and 6.3 rebounds on just 41% from the floor, including just 12 points on 2-8 from the floor and registering a -19 in the season ending 130-93 beatdown courtesy of the eventual champion New York Knicks.

By opting out now, both sides gain the opportunity to craft a contract that benefits the team’s long-term roster construction while rewarding the veteran guard with additional years of security.

With NBA free agency officially underway, expect negotiations between Harden and the Cavaliers to move quickly.
