Marcus Spears Jr. Reclassifies to 2026, Commits to Texas

The top-ranked player in ESPN SCNext’s Class of 2027 is headed to Austin sooner than expected.

Five-star forward Marcus Spears Jr. has officially reclassified to the Class of 2026 and committed to the University of Texas, he announced Thursday to ESPN’s Paul Biancardi. The move allows Spears to join the Longhorns for the upcoming 2026-27 season rather than waiting another year.

The 6-foot-9 standout from Dynamic Prep (Texas) had been regarded as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 class. Following his reclassification, he slots among the elite prospects in the 2026 recruiting class and becomes one of the biggest additions of the offseason for first-year Texas head coach Sean Miller.

Spears chose the Longhorns over a host of national powers, including LSU, Arizona, Alabama and Kentucky. His commitment continues Texas’ recruiting momentum and gives the Longhorns another versatile frontcourt weapon with the size, athleticism and defensive versatility to contribute immediately.

The son of former NFL Pro Bowler and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears and former WNBA player Aiysha Smith, Spears Jr. comes from one of the nation’s most accomplished athletic families. His sister, Macaria Spears, is also a standout athlete at Texas as a member of the Longhorns’ volleyball program.

With Spears joining an already talented roster, Texas’ outlook in the SEC and nationally receives another significant boost heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
